Why Inheritance Tax is a Bad Idea for Single People

Marjon Moed, from Holland's, Centre for Individuals Living Alone, says, "The government determines that your partner should be the most important person in your life. More than three million Dutch people currently live alone, almost one in five. And there will only be more in the future. Yet our society still seems to be geared towards couples. As a single person you are disadvantaged by the government. If you want to leave money to your partner, this can be done quite easily. But if you want to leave the same €600,000 to a good friend, or someone else close to you, then that person will pay more than €200,000 in tax on it. The government thus determines that a partner is more important than a best friend."
